Here's what going down with the W.W.A.V. DVDs--
The discs are dual-layer, making them very difficult to duplicate. Normally I could 'span' the video files over multiple discs, however my DVD copy software for some reason is unable to do this with these particular discs.
There is consumer technology available to burn dual-layer discs (and in fact, I have access to it), however the media is still cost prohibitive. The price for one dual-layer DVD blank is $10.00. Factor in the fact that this is a two-disc movie ($20.00) and you quickly come to the conclusion that I can't sell this for any kind of reasonable price.
Therefore Sunday's DVD release will most likely be on a single DVD in DivX format, encoded at the highest possible setting to fit on one disc. The price will most likely be $8.00.
If anyone really badly wants a true DVD copy of this, with all the menus and alternate camera angles intact, let me know. It'll run you $32 though. |

Update:
I'm ripping the discs to DivX right now. It looks like there will be no problem fitting the 2-disc feature onto a single DVD in DivX format.
In fact, I believe there will be enough space left over for The Fighting Perverts on the same disc. Now wouldn't that be nice.
I've been told by one person that despite the cost, it might be worth purchasing the dual layer perfect copies of WWAV. If anyone else is interested in this, please let me know. |

Update:
The ripping is taking longer than expected. I made a particularly silly gaff, encoding the wrong audio track onto the video, so now you can hear the commentators' distracting voices over the action. I'm re-encoding the affected scenes now.
I was wrong with my estimate of the file sizes - in fact it now appears that even with DivX it may still use up two discs.
The video files themselves are beautiful. I can't discern any quality difference between the DVD original and the DivX version. Part of this is because no additional compression is being used. DivX can easily compress a 4.7GB movie into a 700MB file for burning to a CD, but I decided quality was more important in this case, so the files end up being 2.6GB for the first disc.
There will be a unique video file for each chapter of the disc.
It looks like this won't be ready for release today, but tomorrow is looking good. |
